The Lasagna Lens: How Basketball, Hockey, and Leadership All Relate to the Word “Index”

Leadership, like sports, is about strategy, awareness, and knowing your position, and the word index ties them all together. Let’s put on The Lasagna Lens™ and see why.

Basketball & Hockey: Position, Index, and Timing
I’ve always loved both sports and more, and what each continues to teach me never stops surprising me. Take basketball or hockey, for example. Every player has a position—a mental and physical “index” of where they are and where they need to be. Guards, forwards, centers, wingers, goalies… each is responsible for their zone and for reading the game.
A high-performing leader does the same. They maintain an index of priorities: who to support, when to intervene, and when to let their team take the shot. Just like players anticipate plays, leaders anticipate challenges and measure progress at every layer, much like an index tracks changes over time.

Lasagna: The Ultimate Leadership Metaphor
Why lasagna? Because leadership, like lasagna, has layers, and each layer contributes to the final result.
  • Basketball or hockey strategy layers: offense, defense, transitions, morale.
  • Leadership layers: vision, execution, team culture, outcomes.

An index, in this context, is the mental “map” a leader keeps—like a coach’s playbook or a player’s game awareness. It shows where each layer sits, how they interact, and where adjustments are needed.

If you’ve ever tried to eat lasagna straight from the pan, you know why layering matters. One misaligned layer and it collapses. The same goes for leadership, ignore your mental index, and your team’s performance can wobble like a soggy noodle.

High-Performing Leaders: The Ultimate Players
Top athletes and leaders share a surprising number of traits:
  1. Awareness: They constantly monitor the field (or organization).
  2. Precision: Every pass, every decision counts.
  3. Adaptability: Adjusting in real-time to shifting dynamics.
  4. Layered thinking: Understanding how multiple elements (layers) interact to produce outcomes.

Through the Lasagna Lens, leaders who master these traits are essentially keeping a living index, a guide for both strategy and execution that ensures success, even when things get messy.
Basketball, hockey, lasagna, and leadership may seem like a strange mix—but the index connects them. It’s about:
  • Positioning: Knowing where you are and where you need to go
  • Prioritization: Managing layers carefully (like lasagna or plays)
  • Measurement: Constantly checking the scoreboard, morale, and progress

High-performing leaders treat every project like a championship game and every lasagna like a layered strategy plan: careful, intentional, and deliciously effective when done right.

The Lasagna Lens in Action
So, leaders, athletes, and anyone navigating complexity: remember the power of your internal index. It’s your guide for layering strategy, making precise moves, and adjusting in real-time.
I love both sports and more, and what each continues to teach me reminds me that leadership is always a mix of passion, awareness, and practice. And if you ever feel stuck… just think of lasagna, skates, and basketballs. Layer smart, step carefully, and take the shot.
Because at the end of the day, high-performing leaders don’t just follow an index—they become one… guiding, measuring, and inspiring every step of the way.

Stay aware, pass strategically, layer thoughtfully, and take your shot, through the Lasagna Lens, may your leadership always be deliciously on point!
