In life, faith is often described as a foundation — something solid and unmoving. But what if faith is more dynamic than that? What if it’s not just the base we stand on, but also the layers that build us up — and even the unseen force that keeps us burning with purpose?
Let me introduce you to some and others know my perspective is through the Lasagna Lens — a delicious metaphor for how faith contributes to flourishing, advancement, and the kind of confidence that isn’t loud, but grounded. The Lasagna Lens: Layers of Belief and Purpose Think about a lasagna for a second. It’s not just one ingredient; it’s a rich, layered dish — pasta, sauce, cheese, meat or veggies, repeated again and again until it becomes something whole and satisfying. Every layer matters. Every part contributes. That’s how faith works in a flourishing life. It’s not just one big, dramatic act of belief. It’s layered:
Faith Is Also the Air Between the Logs Now let’s switch metaphors for a moment. If the lasagna lens gives us a layered view of faith, the fire gives us a picture of its invisible power. In a well-burning fire, logs alone don’t do the job. Stack them too tightly, and the fire suffocates. It’s the air between the logs that gives the fire life — that fuels the burn. Faith is like that air. It may be unseen, but it’s what keeps the flame of purpose burning. You can have all the resources — skill, money, knowledge — but without faith, without that breath of trust in something bigger than yourself, the fire dims. Faith gives space for oxygen. It allows movement, breath, and even mystery. It’s what makes the difference between a spark and a blaze. Faith Without Works Is Dead But faith isn’t just about believing or hoping. The Bible reminds us plainly: “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:26). That means faith must be active — it must move, stretch, and show itself through our actions. Just like lasagna — once the noodle is boiled and removed from the pot, it can stretch, move, and bend. It becomes usable. Before that, it’s stiff, brittle, and inflexible. Faith is the same way. When it’s "boiled" through life’s challenges, and activated through action, it becomes flexible and effective — ready to hold layers of purpose, love, and service. Just like lasagna needs all its layers to come together, and a fire needs air to keep burning, faith requires action to be alive. It’s not enough to simply have faith tucked away quietly inside — it must fuel the work we do, the risks we take, the kindness we show, and the purpose we pursue. Flourishing Through Faith When faith is layered like lasagna and breathed like air, it creates the conditions for flourishing. Here’s how:
Final Thoughts: Faith as Food and Fire When I look through the lasagna lens, faith isn’t a distant or overly abstract concept. It’s earthy. It’s nourishing. It’s layered, imperfect, and incredibly human. And when its seen as the air between the logs in a fire, you realize that faith isn’t just structure — it’s spirit. It’s what animates everything else. Remember, faith without works is dead — so keep layering your faith, keep breathing life into it through action, and watch how it fuels your flourishing, your purpose, and your confidence.
