Extra Cheese Leadership: When Parkour Meets the Lasagna Effect

If the first lesson of leadership is that it’s layered like lasagna, the second lesson might be this: sometimes the noodles slide.  That’s where the real learning begins.

Anyone who practices Parkour will tell you the truth behind those jaw-dropping videos: there are a lot of failed attempts behind every smooth vault. A lot. Probably enough attempts to qualify as a full-family-size tray of lasagna and leadership works the same way.

We tend to celebrate the clean jump: the perfect strategy rollout, the seamless team collaboration, the quarterly results that look like they came straight out of a leadership cookbook, but behind every “effortless” outcome are layers of preparation, trial, error, and the occasional metaphorical faceplant.

Let’s call this The Lasagna Effect of Leadership.  In lasagna, every layer matters. Skip the sauce and things get dry. Forget the cheese and people notice. Overcook the noodles and the whole structure collapses into a sloppy situation nobody planned for.  Leadership is no different, sometimes leaders nail the strategy but forget the culture layer, sometimes they build a brilliant team but skip the communication sauce, and occasionally, everyone realizes halfway through the meeting that the “plan” was more like uncooked pasta.

Parkour athletes know something powerful: progress comes from repetition, adjustment, and the willingness to try again after a less-than-graceful landing.  Great leaders adopt that same mindset, they experiment, adjust mid-air, and they laugh when things wobble.

Because leadership, much like lasagna, is rarely perfect the first time out of the oven.
However, with the right layers, the right ingredients, and a little courage to jump again, it becomes something remarkable.

And if you fall?  Well, just remember even the best lasagna sometimes needs a second bake.
